BreedingValue goes EUROSENSE

Project presentation at the 11th Conference on Sensory and Consumer Research, EUROSENSE 2024 in Dublin

The Breeding Value project was presented as a research initiative focused on developing new breeding strategies for high-value and resilient berries at the 11th Conference on Sensory and Consumer Research, EUROSENSE 2024: A Sense of Global Culture, held in Dublin from September 8 to 11, 2024.

In the BreedingValue project, sensory evaluation plays a crucial role in understanding consumer preferences and guiding breeding programs to develop high-quality blueberry varieties that meet market demands.

Two posters were presented, showing data resulting from analysis on Italian Blueberry genotypes carried out by the researchers of the BreedingValue partner institution CNR-IBE Bologna (Italy) related to their work within WP3 and WP4.

One poster focused on the sensory data collected across two consecutive seasons (2022 and 2023) from trained judges implemented with data from rapid methodologies (Rate-All-That-Apply method) assessed by consumers. The work aimed to define precise cultivar sensory traits stable across the seasons. The other poster showed data from the analysis of volatile organic compounds (HS-SPME extraction coupled with GC-MS) of blueberries across the season 2022. These results were integrated with sensory data from trained judges and consumers to propose a model of a complete exploration of food aroma, extremely beneficial for improving product quality.

These two works are interconnected and the findings provide an advantageous tool to better understand consumer needs and to support decision-making in breeding programs to select new genotypes based on targeted flavor traits.
